About the Koozie

So what is the correct way to spell it or say it. Is it correct to say koozie, cozies, coozie, cozy, coozy, or hugger? I personally think it depends on where you are from. My buddy from Tennessee calls it a hugger. The Dictionary and Encyclopedia use koozie. The first manufacture of the koozie called it a koozie, so I am going to stick with what is best known.
The beverage koozie was first introduced in 1982 by the RCC Koozie company based in San Antonio, Texas. The 12 ounce can koozies were made of styrofoam and not very flexible. The empty container was easy to remove and was not very snug. I remember growing up around my dad, he always had his can beverage in a Miller High Life foam koozie. In the 90's the koozie was made of polyurethane and formed a tight fit around your canned beverage. You had to crush the can to break the vacumm seal.
So why hug your beverage with a koozie? Cold beverages are especially popular during the warmer months of the year. Many of us spend the summer outside at the beach, at a event, or at family barbecue. The container of your beverage is typically made of aluminum or glass which are great conductors of heat. Your hand, the sun, and the outdoor elements will cause your beverage to warm quite rapidly due to conduction, radiation, and convection. Nothing sucks more than picking up your canned beverage to only find that the last bit is warm. The science behind the cylindrical device is designed to snugly fit around a standard aluminum beverage can. The koozie will help prevent heat transfer to a large percentage of the can's surface area. Therefore keeping your beverage cold and your hand warm.
Koozies are typically made of flexible neoprene like a divers suit. It is great insulating material for a 12 ounce can or bottle to retain its cold temperature. Many koozies today are made of plastic, flexible foam, and polyurethane.
The majority of beverage koozies are decorated by screen printing or by 4-color sublimation. Screen printing is typically the less expensive option. Some custom koozies can be embroidered making the a great gift.
Koozies are used primarily in the promotional products industry and the wedding industry. Companies often use koozies as an inexpensive method to get their message out.
